Annual System Flushing Begins in March for San Lorenzo Valley Water District

Routine Maintenance Improves Water Quality for Customers

FEB. 22, 2023 — BOULDER CREEK, CA — The San Lorenzo Valley Water District will flush its water mains this spring, an annual program that maintains water pipelines and complies with requirements set by the California Department of Water Resources Control Board.

System flushing will occur on weekdays from March 11 to May 23 at various locations throughout the District during regular business hours (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.). See the complete flushing schedule here.

Yearly water main flushing removes iron and manganese deposits that accumulate in the District’s water distribution system. Water main flushing is the process of cleaning the inside of pipes by opening hydrants and releasing water at a speed of up to 5 feet per second to remove deposits built up inside the mains. Consistent and periodic flushing improves water quality, maintains capacity of pipes and minimizes episodes of discolored water caused by iron and manganese. Iron and manganese do not pose a health threat to customers and are common minerals found in groundwater wells throughout the nation, though they can affect the aesthetic quality of water.

Water is safe to drink during flushing. Customers may experience periods of low water pressure and/or short interruption of water service. Please reduce water usage during this period and refrain from doing laundry, as the water may be discolored for a short time. This discolored water can sometimes cause staining of clothes and plumbing fixtures.

Please visit the District’s website to see the complete flushing schedule and frequently asked questions. Call the District at (831) 338-2153 with questions.
