2024 WATER MAIN FLUSHING PROGRAM
The San Lorenzo Valley Water District is preparing to undertake our annual water main flushing program throughout the District. The purpose of this program is to remove iron and manganese deposits which accumulate in the distribution system piping.
From time to time, some District customers may have experienced periods of discolored water caused by iron and manganese. Iron and manganese are common minerals found in groundwater wells throughout the nation. Although these minerals do not pose a health threat to consumers, iron and manganese can affect the aesthetic quality of water. Iron and manganese can precipitate and deposit in the water mains. Occasionally, during higher flows the deposits become dislodged resulting in discolored water. This discolored water can sometimes cause staining of clothes and plumbing fixtures.
To remove these deposits, the District will be flushing the main distribution system piping.
WHEN:
Flushing will begin on March 11 and will end May 23, 2024, at various locations throughout the District between the regular business hours of 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. The District requests your cooperation by asking that you reduce water usage during this period. Please refrain from doing laundry, as the water may be discolored for a short time. In addition, you may experience periods of low water pressure and/or interruption of water service. Please visit the District website to see what dates your neighborhood will be affected and mark the dates on your calendar.
Every effort will be made by District Staff to perform this operation with minimal disruption of service and inconvenience to our customers.
WHERE:
The areas of Ben Lomond, Felton, Lompico and Scotts Valley typically have flushing done each year. This is due to the increased use of the Olympia wells for source water. The buildup of sediment and biofilms in water mains can restrict water flow, contribute to pipe corrosion and deteriorate water quality.
Below are the 2024 flushing fliers for the specific areas where and when the flushing will be occurring, please review for if your street is included. Direct mailers are sent out prior to the flushing so customers can plan accordingly.
North System Flushing
